l'enfant assassin des mouches / jean claude vannier

how many times a day do you tell yourself, wow-that-guy-is-so-smart and how-the-hell-does-he-know-all-of-that, i must-be-so-stupid ? right, it can't be just me. i knew i wasn't the only ignorant git in the room. :P

anyway. i didn't know about jean claude vannier and well, reading about him now, or rather listening to this, maybe i should have? bit reluctant to post that track because it's really part of a whole and it feels a little bit out of context but here you go.. the whole album is quite an experience, i'll leave it at that.

see if they have our song on the jukebox over there

i love that song. i think it just got stuck somewhere in my head, it's got its own little space there. with water and a first-aid kit so it's always good and happy. :) everytime i listen to it.. i see myself sitting outside the angel, a friend smoking on my left and someone else in front of me. a quiet summer evening last year. everything feels right.

anais mitchell will be touring the usa throughout the winter and... back to london in january. hopefully a few more european dates too!

variations on a theme

again, i'm being extremely naive. it probably shows on my face. that's why people keep giving me the talk. like.. you better start thinking about your old days. you better start saving for when you retire. you better find a job that pays well. 40 years from now.. hmm, yes. will think about it. and forget.

23.11.09

the world is lazy, but you and me we're just crazy

not very talkative these days. ok, thinking... the tunes are great (as in, i think you'd like them, guys), mid-60's chantal goya was so damn cute, jean pierre léaud wasn't bad either and.. less is more?

en quatre couleurs

i'm a bit hyper. it might be the medicine i've been taking the whole week. i was actually feeling rather morose (yes, morose) yesterday and then all of a sudden.. i don't know, i felt really happy? this usually doesn't happen to me, you know, happiness, so bear with me. the football started it. ireland was leading and i thought that was really amusing. i couldn't stop laughing. best football game ever. unfortunately les bleus cheated their way out of it, but still! silly me thought thierry henry would go and talk to the referee, be honest! i know i know. how naive. frenchies, you fools. the other way around and you'd be here talking about justice and human rights. first zidane now this, wow, it's so much fun being a captain! anyway, back to me. like i said, i'm feeling a bit hyper. like that song. i can't help jumping/dancing around to it! then i get a dizzy spell or worse, a sneeezing fit - in any case, not attractive.

nouvelle vague's lastest album, '3', was released in june..

you're just a little baby

ok. i'm sick. my computer is acting up. my parents are driving me nuts. i was going to write about me being 26 and how somehow it's such a turning point.. my mum is always telling me i'm 2 years behind when it comes to maturity, i think she's wrong, i'm 5 years behind at least. i'm the most unpractical person you'll ever meet, i just don't know anything about being a grown up. but hey, 26, wow, that feels grown up.

marina diamandis' debut album, family jewels, will be out next february. meanwhile, check out these tunes - 'i am not a robot' especially is so absolutely catchy. keep in mind i can't breathe, but am still singing along so yeah, it must be good. i'm all for smart and funny pop music, really. and a nice british accent...

emily haines..

you know when you're at a festival outside and you're way at the back with your friends? and the music is just drifting out on the breeze. that's the feeling i've dedicated my life to, i realized.. how's that possible? that all of us together, if it was on public transportation, we'd have such a different attitude to each other.. you know? it's amazing. music blows my mind, i don't understand, it's just vibrations! and yet.. it's the most beautiful thing.

love. ditto.
i'll be seeing you in a few days. take care.

parceque je vais toujours jusqu'au bout

talk about timing. edith piaf's life story was on tv yesterday evening and of course i was glued to my screen, half-grinning half-sobbing, even though i've seen the movie a billion times already. found out singer songwriter martha wainwright's just released a live album of covers, featuring rare songs from piaf's repertoire. i'm very much looking forward to that.

look out the window

these guys might just be your best friends. they could be sitting in your living room right now, watching movies and chilling out - not even talking that much, you'd feel good and content just having them around. but hey, they've got real friends, i assume you guys are popular enough the way it is, fair enough. we'll have to stick to the songs instead : lo-fi folkish pop music, quirky melodies and a soulful voice, it really isn't that bad.
based in los angeles and led by singer and songwriter morgan nagler*, the whispertown 2000 have released 2 albums, livin' in a dream (2006) and swim (2008) while touring with bright eyes, jenny lewis and the elected.

oh and i was only partially kidding with that whole house crashing plan.

*for all of you rilo kiley fans out there, that's jenny's "best friend morgan". you know, the one that gets mentioned in every live show and song ?

i howl when we're apart

can i say how much i love this video ? or the t4 on the beach set. hurricane, right?
and i'm sort of thinking of going to one of her london gigs next month.. but i don't think that's possible. can't even believe it's not sold out yet.

florence and the machine also stopped by kcrw last week - it's here.

The Kills @ Canal Plus 03-08

thought i'd celebrate the upcoming kills album. :) that's the great thing about music, isn't it. there's always moore to come. granted, sometimes you wish there wasn't but that's another story. :D
anyway, that was recorded for french channel canal plus, i believe around the time 'midnight boom' was released, so you get quite a lot of new songs. a few "old" classics too. :)

and when the battle was done

(photo © Jean-Sébastien Zanchi - Le HibOO)

just back from paris! bat for lashes. at the olympia. happiness.

and i thought natasha khan sounded good in studio. what depth of voice. absolutely flawless. the band as a whole is really effective. and sarah jones has to be the cutest drummer ever (yeah, ringo lost his throne a long time ago). speaking of which, yesterday was the last date with the current band. can't wait to see what the next chapter will bring!

word of the day :

Q magazine / is your kills bandmate jamie hince jealous of your success with the dead weather?
vv / no, no, not at all. jamie's been absolutely brilliant. and we're in london right now writing songs for the next kills album, which we're hoping to release early next year.

Q / and there'll be another dead weather album too?
vv / yeah, we already wrote 15 songs when we had 3 days off. it's an unstoppable train.

yes, i long for adventure

scout niblett's been on my must-check-out-at-some-point list forever. i remember listening to 'drummer boy' quite a lot and while her very sparse style attracted me at first, i ended up feeling a bit put off by it.. i could see what the challenge was and decided i'd try it again later. it does take a bit of aging sometimes, doesn't it?
then today i was feeling a bit tired and peckish on the drive back from the airport, put my ipod on shuffle and here you go. whatever happened since the last time i listened to these songs.. i found myself making funny faces and singing stupidly while tapping my feet.

voice + guitar + drums. or voice + drums. see what you can make of it. i've got the biggest urge to open the window and play it really LOUD.

and... i think cat power's 'american flag' was written about her. haha. like totally!

my new friend / plays drums all the time / her magic heart / feels everything / she plays the difficult parts and i play / difficult / she goes shoop shoop eh doop

here is a great article/interview that sums up everything i meant to say but had no words for..
