also, you can listen to the new best coast song [here].

on repeat.

inside a bubble

picked up these guys on the radio yesterday - you know when a song jumps at you and you end up humming it for hours? their debut album, 'beachcomber's windowsill' is set to be released at the end of the month but hey, do yourself a favour and watch the video, maybe we can all go zorbing together?

i know, right?
stornoway will be touring england throughout the month so make sure to check their [myspace] for details.

"this is very much my stepping stone"

i cannot even begin to explain how much i love laura marling's second album, 'i speak because i can'. randomly though, one of her most fascinating features must be that even though she never falters or disappoints (much to the contrary), you know as you listen to her that there is more to come.
it seems so simple. that's something else, isn't it? quiet confidence. very youthful yet timeless. i wouldn't call it a coming of age record, she's always sounded this focused. the message hasn't changed - this here is a reinforcement. i love how 'rambling man' starts with oh naive little me and goes on to let it always be known that i was who i am.

well i own this field, and i wrote this sky,

and i have no reason to reason with you.
- blackberry stone

there's so much more to say obviously. [hope in the air] absolutely blows me away.

and btw, because i find the album artwork and cd cover to be so fitting and beautiful : the girl who did the illustrations is called sophie milner and you can learn more about her [here].

19.4.10

yes.

and sometimes when you're on you're really fucking on
and your friends they sing along and they love you
but the lows are so extreme that the good seems fucking cheap
and it teases you for weeks in its absense
but you'll fight and you'll make it through
you'll fake it if you have to
and you'll show up for work with a smile
and you'll be be better you'll be smarter
more grown up and a better daughter
or son and a real good friend
and you'll be awake and you'll be alert
you'll be positive though it hurts
and you'll laugh and embrace all your friends
and you'll be a real good listener
you'll be honest you'll be brave
you'll be handsome you'll be beautiful
you'll be happy.

17.4.10

how i love this

AHHHHHHHHH. looks like i'm gonna be missing out on best coast next month. damnit. check their [myspace] for details on the tour.

foot tapping and more

the curls! the curls!

uhm? oh yes, sorry, meant the sea the sea! genius. looooove peggy sue. and not only for rosa's curls, i swear. though you gotta admit...

*

now this is serious foot tapping, people.
the debut album, 'sons of noel and adrian', has just been released and the band is currently touring the uk + europe. more details here.

so feisty and delightful. very very good.
thank you, mr postman!

peggy who?

peggy sue's debut album, 'fossils and other phantoms', was released a couple of days ago - i have yet to listen to it (mr postman?) but something tells me i/we will love it. i mean, i've been obsessing over 'yo mama' for the longest time. the bunch of eps that preceded the album were all excellent, doubled with really neat and innovative atwork (i know cos the postman didn't keep those). the band will be heading to europe pretty soon too: i foresee a month filled with smoky cafés, obscure liquor drinking, and antiques shopping. or something.

you can read a track by track guide to the album here.

all details to be found on their myspace page or at peggywho.com.

1. no mortal man has yet suceeded
in climbing the big glass mountain.
'i know,' said the drummer boy,
'but my heart is stout and determined
and i long for adventure, yes i long for adventure.'
- 'drummer boy' / scout niblett.

2. 'it's a boy,' said mr. matzerath, who presumed himself to be my father. 'he will take over the store when he grows up. at last we know why we've been working our fingers to the bone.'
mama thought less about the store than about outfitting her son : 'oh, well, i knew it would be a boy even if i did say once in a while it was going to be a girl.'
thus at an early age i made the acquaintance of feminine logic. the next words were : 'when little oskar is three, he will have a toy drum.'
(...) aside from this speculation about my future, i quickly realized that mama and this mr. matzerath were not equipped to understand or respect my decisions whether positive or negative. lonely and misunderstood, oskar lay beneath the light bulbs, and figuring that things would go on like this for some sixty or seventy years, until a final short circuit should cut off all sources of all light, he lost his enthusiasm even before his life beneath the light bulbs had begun. it was the only prospect of the drum that prevented me from expressing more forcefully my desire to return to the womb.
besides, the midwife had already cut my umbilical cord. there was nothing more to be done.
- the tin drum / günter grass.

28.3.10

glory glory hallelujah

"in the summer of 2001 i found myself in switzerland at the montreux jazz festival. i had just finished the first year of my mechanical engineering degree and had decided to get away on my own to see some music. i got a little bored of montreux quickly and decided to take a train. arriving in interlaken one night at the train station i found that all the hostels there were full. i eventually found a hostel on the list that had space and thought it rather peculiar that they made me promise i would come before they told me where they were located. it soon became clear why.

i took a train, another train, a funicular railway (one of those really steep ones), then a narrow gauge railway along a mountain ridge and then a cable car before I arrived in the tiny hamlet of gimmelwald. it was late and I went to sleep pretty much straight away.

i woke the next day to find the most beautiful view out the window of the dormitory. three enourmous swiss mountains; the eiger, the jungfrau and the monch. but almost as surprising was the fact that they had a piano in this remote mountain hostel. that night i met some other musicians staying there and we played songs 'til the wee small hours. it was great.

the next day i hiked to the nearest village to withdraw some money and found that i had none. i had no money to pay board, food... nothing. i went and explained my situation to petra the landlady at the hostel. she explained that the bar had never done such good business as the night before and that icould stay at the hostel if i played the piano at night. sounded like a good deal to me.

i stayed there for a while. in the days i went hiking and at night we made music. a lot of it not very pretty, not very good, but a lot of fun. i made friends who looked after me, fed me, bought me beer. and then one night sitting at the piano something inside me clicked. a strange serendipitous sense of belonging halfway up a swiss mountain many miles from home. i was going to be a musician."

*

you may be familiar with pete roe because of his touring with laura marling & co - i was lucky enough to see him open for her barfly gig last week and what a highlight it was. along with andrew davie, the 2 of them being ridiculously charming and talented. it was a rare treat and a perfect start to a memorable evening. what an amazing guitar player and storyteller indeed! check out his myspace for details about his 'propeller' album and 'animals' ep. there should be another ep out some time this summer too!

in any case, watch that devil's dancefloor video, you'll be singing it the whole day. oh pickle me in every kind of sin..

25.3.10

you gotta dance.

"and before i knew it, there wasn't a thing to my name left. they stripped me to the bone. and then they kicked me out. a real education, let me tell you, " he forced another smile. "made me grow up real fast."
"everybody has to grow up."
"you're right there. i used to think the years would go by in order, that you get older one year at a time," said gotanda, peering into my face. "but it's not like that. it happens overnight."
- dance dance dance / h.murakami

21.3.10

we never had it so good

the indelicates have a new album out 12th april! it's called 'songs for swinging lovers' and no doubt it'll be rude, obnoxious and hilarious (whoa, rhymes). oh also, swinging? they mean that literally.

16.3.10

*

such a smooth killer of a song, complete with punch line and detached pose. reminds me of sophie zelmani's 'breeze'.
sarah blasko's just moved to london, all the way from australia. first stop in france though : she'll be part of the femmes s'en mêlent festival, 4 gigs in march, then off to support the temper trap on their uk tour. that all sounds really good, doesn't it?

there's nothing worse than waking up in total darkness. it's like having to go back and live life all over from the beginning. when i first opened my eyes, it was as if i were living someone else's life. after an extremely long time, this began to macth up with my own life. a curious overlap this, my own life as someone else's. it was improbable that such a person as myself could even be living.
i went to the kitchen and splashed water on my face, then drank down a couple of glasses quickly. the water was cold as ice, but still my face was burning hot. i sat back down on the sofa amid the darkness and silence began gradually to gather up the pieces of my life. i couldn't manage to grasp too much, but at least it was my life. slowly i returned to myself. it's hard to explain what it is to get there, and it'd undoubtedly try your interest.
(...) i thought about cells. like my ex-wife had said, ultimately every last cell of you is lost. lost even to yourself. i pressed the palm of my hand against my cheek. the face my hand felt in the dark wasn't my own, i didn't think. it was the face of another that had taken the shape of my face. but i couldn't remember the details. everything - names, sensations, places - dissolved and was swallowed into the darkness.

amazing.
also, the new video for 'dog days are over' is up! [this way!]

6.3.10

ok. i'm a tiny bit wary of posting some more laura marling related stuff but really it's all i've been listening to. i'm feeling a bit restless and really drawn to her voice - it's got a timeless aspect to it that's really soothing. also this is pure genius :

could these guys look any better, now that's something i'd like to discuss.

that song is so good, it beats peanut butter ice cream. with butterscotch sauce. i swear! listened to it a billion times over the last 2 days, i still get that goofy smile. like i wanna run in circles until my brain collapses. damn!

could it get aaany better. while i'm at it, using ridiculous metaphors and all, throw soko into the mix and even kittens couldn't compete. antidepressant, anyone?

now i haven't listened to kid harpoon's latest record, 'once', but his 2 eps are absolutely brilliant and so enjoyable, i can only recommend you check him out.

23.2.10

18.2.10

rather surreal

quite curious about this guy. poke around a bit and you'll find his world and influences to be quite intriguing.

also, his new project is called disappearers. that includes gillian maguire too, and i keep hearing her name cos she's been playing with loads of cool people : kid harpoon, soko, the mystery jets etc. so yeah, definitely keep an eye on that!

13.2.10

oooooh i can't wait.
laura marling's new album will be released in march (usa, early april) and a special cd/dvd edition is already available to pre-order - uk only. it includes a 45-minute documentary, live goodies (think johnny flynn, mumford + sons, andrew bird, peggy sue) and links to more laura marling-related awesomeness.

but for now, two new tracks recorded last winter in india :

12.2.10

there lies a lady

saw johnny flynn at the barfly yesterday. ahh, flushed cheeks. on his own, he was very sweet and heartwarming. [see for yourself]

opening for him was brighton-based lauren doss, aka mechanical bride.

now dear readers... honestly prevails : i'm an idiot. no, no, really, i insist. see.. my plan was to drop an obscure and neat little reference to caroline weeks because that's who lauren doss reminded me of. if you'd like to think i'm an intelligent person, please refrain, and stop reading now.

hm. you're still here.

are you sure?

well, ok. i JUST realized caroline weeks was actually on stage with her. and she was standing 1m away from me during the whole johnny flynn set. I MEAN, how dumb can i get!

so yeah. back on topic. one thing you should do is go to mechanical bride's myspace page, and check out her cover of rihanna's 'umbrella'. i know everybody is fed up of 'umbrella' at this point but this is really interesting - sweet and eerie, a whole different experience. her own songs are very good too.

9.2.10

because the all-carb diet isn't working

first heard that song on the 'one kiss can lead to another' compilation, hundreds of tracks, loads of really neat girl groups and artists but that one really stood out for me. certainly is the most original anyway : well... boys and love issues. but really. it's about calories. do you wanna lose a pound a day? try the worryin' way.
but you know what, for such a superficial topic, it's got lots of soul too. and there's so much talent there. the fabulettes were loretta ludlow, addie williams, mattie lovett and annette snell - based in florida, the band was first known as the mar-vells and mostly did session work in the area 'til the mid-60's. then signed with monument records and became the fabulettes, quite a cool name if i must say. loretta ludlow used to sing lead but it's actually addie williams here, what an absolute kick ass voice! really cheeky and deep and playful. very quotable lyrics, best opening line ever.

annette snell went on to a succesful solo career, you can hear some of that here too. again, it's marvelous if a bit more serious.

5.2.10

have one on me

was just listening to the new songs from joanna newsom's upcoming album, 'have one on me'. a triple album at that! sounds really great, doesn't it? liking the artwork too. and wow, does she look good.

3.2.10

randoms

and : i need new earphones. those i'm stuck with.. well. imagine you're underwater and someone is playing music above. or you're standing in the middle of a huge garage, trying to have a conversation with someone on the other side. that's how it sounds like. so yeah.

i'm keeping them tho, it's really cool. note to self : use old earphones when drunk.

keep seeing/hearing marina & the diamonds everywhere. getting anxious. better turn out good.

1.2.10

i'd like to develop but my distorted sleeping pattern is currently messing with my brain. sorry.

went record shopping yesterday - picked up metric's 'grow up and blow away' among others. then realized i was only a couple of streets away from where some of these songs were recorded.

really neat track. mind you, it took me ages to understand the overall meaning.. but... i think i got it. go me!

hello seahorse! is a mexican band - looks like they made a pretty good name for themselves over the last few years. two albums out and a third one on the go. that particular track won them the "best song of the year" award at mexico's indie-o awards last year.. just read someone comparing them to metric too.

devil's spoke

because i posted about mumford + sons, johnny flynn, jay jay pistolet and couldn't possibly ignore laura marling - however predictable. seriously, these guys make for the coolest gang ever.

don't you love it when an artist actually lives up to the hype? you hear about someone again and again and when you finally decide to give them a try, you're still blown away.

i've been listening to laura marling's first album, 'alas i cannot swim', a lot over the last few days, it really is amazing. every song slowly builds up until it reaches that point when you can't do anything but listen. every song there stands on its own, every song a turning point. but there's more to come too : new album, 'i speak because i can', is due for release in march. possibly followed by another record end of the year? and i'm already so in love with the new songs. wow. anyway, enough talking! watch the videos and you'll see what i'm talking about :

work this weekend was insane but entertaining. the ghostbusters definitely spiced it up. yes, i did say ghostbusters.
