"this is very much my stepping stone"

i cannot even begin to explain how much i love laura marling's second album, 'i speak because i can'. randomly though, one of her most fascinating features must be that even though she never falters or disappoints (much to the contrary), you know as you listen to her that there is more to come.
it seems so simple. that's something else, isn't it? quiet confidence. very youthful yet timeless. i wouldn't call it a coming of age record, she's always sounded this focused. the message hasn't changed - this here is a reinforcement. i love how 'rambling man' starts with oh naive little me and goes on to let it always be known that i was who i am.

well i own this field, and i wrote this sky,

and i have no reason to reason with you.

there's so much more to say obviously. [hope in the air] absolutely blows me away.

and btw, because i find the album artwork and cd cover to be so fitting and beautiful : the girl who did the illustrations is called sophie milner and you can learn more about her [here].

yes.

and sometimes when you're on you're really fucking on
and your friends they sing along and they love you
but the lows are so extreme that the good seems fucking cheap
and it teases you for weeks in its absense
but you'll fight and you'll make it through
you'll fake it if you have to
and you'll show up for work with a smile
and you'll be be better you'll be smarter
more grown up and a better daughter
or son and a real good friend
and you'll be awake and you'll be alert
you'll be positive though it hurts
and you'll laugh and embrace all your friends
and you'll be a real good listener
you'll be honest you'll be brave
you'll be handsome you'll be beautiful
you'll be happy.

peggy sue's debut album, 'fossils and other phantoms', was released a couple of days ago - i have yet to listen to it (mr postman?) but something tells me i/we will love it. i mean, i've been obsessing over 'yo mama' for the longest time. the bunch of eps that preceded the album were all excellent, doubled with really neat and innovative atwork (i know cos the postman didn't keep those). the band will be heading to europe pretty soon too: i foresee a month filled with smoky cafés, obscure liquor drinking, and antiques shopping. or something.

you can read a track by track guide to the album here.

all details to be found on their myspace page or at peggywho.com.
